The TBN Test Kit is a field-deployable chemical titration system designed for the quantitative determination of Total Base Number (TBN) in lubricating oils, both used and fresh. TBN is expressed in mg of KOH per gram of oil and represents the alkaline reserve available to neutralize acidic byproducts formed during combustion and oxidation processes. Regular monitoring of TBN is critical for assessing lubricant degradation and ensuring extended engine and equipment life.
Principle of Operation:
The test is based on an acid-base titration method wherein a known volume of oil sample is titrated against a standardized acidic titrant (commonly hydrochloric or sulfuric acid in alcohol), using a pH-sensitive indicator (such as bromophenol blue) that marks the endpoint via a distinct color change. The amount of titrant consumed corresponds to the TBN value of the oil.
Kit Components:
- Standardized acid titrant (typically 0.1N HCl or equivalent in isopropanol)
- Solvent system (toluene, isopropanol, or mixed solvent) for proper oil dilution and phase separation
- pH indicator solution (bromophenol blue or potentiometric probe optional)
- Graduated titration apparatus (burette or dropper)
- Reaction vessels/test tubes
- Operating manual with standard titration charts and calculations
Technical Specifications:
| Parameter | Specification |

| TBN Measurement Range | 0–40 mg KOH/g (extendable with dilution) |
| Method | Manual titration (colorimetric endpoint) |
| Accuracy | ±0.5 mg KOH/g (depending on operator skill and sample viscosity) |
| Reproducibility | >95% under standard conditions |
| Sample Volume Required | 1–2 mL |
| Test Duration | Approx. 5–10 minutes per sample |
