Lithium Complex Grease Formulation

Lithium Complex Grease: General Overview, Composition and Formulation
Lithium complex grease uses lithium soap together with a complexing system to achieve higher thermal capability than conventional lithium grease. It is commonly developed for heavy-duty bearings, wheel bearings, mining, steel, cement and other demanding applications.
Product design considers continuous and peak temperature, base-oil viscosity, load, speed, water exposure, relubrication and the required NLGI grade. A high dropping point alone does not establish operating temperature.
General Composition of Lithium Complex Grease
- COMPONENT | PURPOSE
Base oil
Mineral or synthetic oil selected for speed, load and thermal requirements.
Lithium soap system
Forms the primary grease structure.
Complexing component
Develops the complex soap structure and increases dropping point.
Antioxidant
Supports oil and grease stability at elevated temperature.
Rust and corrosion inhibitor
Protects metal surfaces during humid or wet service.
Antiwear and EP additives
Improve wear control and shock-load performance.
Polymer, tackifier or solid lubricant
Added for adhesion, stability or specialized load requirements.
Exact chemistry and percentages are validated for the target product.
Production Process and Lubechem Technical Support
- TYPICAL MANUFACTURING SEQUENCE
1. Charge the selected initial oil quantity.
2. Carry out controlled saponification.
3. Introduce and react the complexing system.
4. Remove water and develop the thickener at high temperature.
5. Add finishing oil in controlled stages.
6. Cool according to the required structure and texture.
7. Add compatible performance additives.
8. Homogenise, deaerate and test.

Lithium Complex Grease: Frequently Asked Questions
- How does lithium complex differ from lithium grease?
The complexing system creates a higher-temperature thickener structure.
Does high dropping point equal safe operating temperature?
No. Base oil, oxidation, bearing design and relubrication also control operating temperature.
Can synthetic grades be developed?
Yes, using compatible synthetic base oils and additives.
Can an unstable production batch be improved?
Often yes, after reviewing the formulation, raw materials, process record and test results.
Does Lubechem support commercial production?
Yes, from laboratory development through the first commercial batches.
